to head near route 214 central avenue. again roads are wet but volumes are light. i'll be back with more traffic at 5:08. former penn state assistant coach jerry sandusky faces sentencing today for child sex abuse. >> his lawyer says sandusky plans to tell the court he is innocent. kristin fisher is live in the satellite center. she's previewing the hearing today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. jerry sandusky did not testify at his june trial but he is expected to speak today at his sentencing. he's expected to proclaim his innocence. in fact yesterday he even called in to a penn state radio station to essentially sort of give a preview of what he's going to be saying today in court. here is just an expert from that recording. take a listen. >> they could take away my life. they can make me out as a monster. they can treat me as a monster but they can't take away my heart. in my heart i know i did not do these alleged disgusting acts. >> reporter: keep in mind that

68-year-old former football coach has already been convicted on 48 counts of child sex abuse but sandusky says he want as new trial. he says the judge denied his legal team adequate time to mount a defense. he also accuses one of his victims of essentially making the whole thing up. >> a young man who is dramatic, a veteran accuser and always sought attention started everything. he was joined by a well orchestrated effort of the media, investigators, the system, penn state, psychologists, civil attorneys and other accusers. >> reporter: about six of sandusky's victims are expected to speak at today's sentencing. he is facing a minimum of ten years and a maximum of 4 years in prison. his attorneys say that they are expecting a very harsh sentence. i'll let you know what they think the best case scenario for their client is coming up at 5:30. >> thanks, chris continue. kristin is live in the satellite center. you can hear more of sandusky's statement. you just go to our website wusa9.com.

also, coming up later today, andrea mccarren is there at the court proceedings. she'll bring us live reaction after it's finished. grief counselors will be available to students and staff today at woodson high school in fairfax, virginia. this after the body of 17-year- old bryan glenn was discovered yesterday in thaiss park. he had been missing since last week. police still have not determined whether this was a suicide or a case of foul play. the centers for disease control says 13,000 people may be exposed to a fungus which can cause lethal meningitis. s that fungus was found in vials of steroids which are used to treat back pain and other painful ailments. officials are not sure just how many shots from that specialty pharmacy in massachusetts may have been contaminated. however, the outbreak thus far has killed nine people nationwide and sickened more than a hundred. it is 5:05. time for the -- 5:03 rather. time for the latest your money report of the morning. >> good morning, jessica doyle. >> good morning. we have earnings season

starting on wall street today. it's going to be big doings the next couple of weeks. traders don't have the greatest of expectations. analysts are expecting companies to post an overall decline in profits for the first time in nearly three years. today that marks the five-year anniversary of the record high closes of the dow and s&p 500. both indexes right now currently about 7% below those levels. not terribly below. check be the numbers the dow starts this morning at 13,583 after dropping 267 points in -- 27 points in trading. nasdaq was down by about 24. the s&p 500 was down by 5. economic slowdowns in asia and europe and worries about u.s. corporate profits have some analysts predicting a possible pullback in the stock market. so we'll keep our eyes on that also on this. germany's chancellor is in athens today for talks with greece's prime minister. the two are expected to discuss the country's financial crisis. greek police have been stepping up security and they're

prepared to close down large sections of athens to contain possible protests that could break out. this is the first visit to greece in five years. senator dianne feinstein is calling for a federal investigation into gas prices in california. she says she doesn't think the spike in prices is related to supply and demand. drivers in california paying an average of $4.67 a gallon which is the highest in the nation. i'll tell you it almost makes our gas prices look good in comparison. aaa says area drivers are paying $3.73 a gallon on average for regular. this morning. at least it's not five bucks. >> something to think about. what do you have for us in the next half-hour? >> holding your computer and date to for ransom. this is a new type of scam that's breaking out. we'll tell you all about it coming up in the next half- hour. >> thanks, jess. more and more people are faking injuries in order to skip tsa security lines. >> a series of controversial ads is beginning to go up in

controversial ads equating muslims to savages have gone up in metro stations across our region. a judge ruled the transit agency must display the american freedom defense initiative ads. metro had asked the group to hold off. the ads are being posted at the tacoma, glenmont and georgia avenue stations. several civil rights organizations are planning counter ads. a former cincinnati bengals cheerleader who admitted having sex with a 17-year-old will know go to jail. she taught at the school where the teen attended. she agreed to never apply for another teaching job. she walked out of the courtroom hand in hand with the teenager and is now working as a legal secretary. some fully abled passengers are using wheelchairs as a ploy to bypass long lines at airport security check points. according to the 1986 air carrier access act, airlines are required to accommodate disabled travelers but they're not required to show any proof of disability. a "new york times" report quote

ten years and a maximum of more than 400 years behind bars. even sandusky's own attorneys are predicting a harsh sentence today. they say the best case scenario is a 30-year sentence. still listen to how one of sandusky's attorneys describes his client on the eve of his sentencing. >> he wants to move on with this case so he can appeal. he's really been upbeat, surprisingly upbeat knowing what he's facing with a lengthy sentence likely to come tomorrow. >> reporter: yesterday crews covered the back entrance of the courthouse to help shield the victims that are expected to testify. about six are expected to speak starts at account a.m. -- at 9:00 a.m. right before it starts a state assessment board will report to the judge on whether or not it deems sandusky a sexually violent predator. if so he would have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. that is of course if he of gets out of prison. mike, andrea?

>> kristin fisher -- >> reporter: it's okay. i called jessica andrea yesterday. >> kristin fisher reporting live from our satellite center. thank you. montgomery county police are investigating the death of a man in clarksburg. around 4:45 yesterday afternoon, police responded to a home in the 23000 block of taylor shop place for a report of a violent person. officers attempted to address the suspect 39-year-old nathan jones after they say he assaulted two of his roommates. during the arrest they pepper sprayed jones to get him under control. a short while later he lost consciousness. he was taking to shady grove hospital where he was later pronounced dead. an 83-year-old man from maryland has died while he was trying to help a woman in a car accident. richard heron was traveling to maine with his sons for a hunting trip. around 2:00 monday morning they came across a crash in harford, -- in hartford, connecticut. a woman lost control of her suv. it slipped over. he was trying to direct traffic

around the vehicle when he saw a tractor-trailer driving right at him. he ended up jumping oaf the rail to get out -- over the rail to get out of the way and he fell 35 feet. he was rushed to the hospital but later died. it's time for another your money report. >> jessica is back with a new cyber threat. >> this is lining a form of digital -- like a form of digital kidnapping. what you need to know about a new scam known as ransom ware. steve merryfield owns a high end sporting goods shop. after 27 years in business he'd been preparing to sell it. all of the records for potential buyers stored on his computer server so he was more than concerned when he realized all of his data had been frozen. >> the last words i remember is this is not good. this is not good. >> reporter: it turned out hackers had taken control of his machine and flashed a

message. for $3,000 he could have his data back but it didn't stop there. he'd have to fork over an additional $1,000 for each week he didn't comply. this crime is so pervasive, it prompted the f.b.i. to put out a warning. the bureau says it's getting dozens of ransom ware complaints each day. >> it's one of the more destructive pieces of mall ware because -- malware because they'll encrypt the files. if you don't pay, they can just delete them. >> reporter: the hackers use such complicated methods, it's virtually impossible to recover your data. it's believed most are operating overseas so track be them down has become -- tracking them down has become futile as well. one reason some fall for the scam? the messages look like they're coming from the government accusing users of things like child pornography. >> it frightens people and preys on their fear. >> in retrospect, the amount of grief this will cause us would

just slow traffic. urbana to clarksburg and then here at shady grove road looks good to the beltway. i'll be back with more at 6:01. it is october 9, buddy check 9 day. have you called your buddy? for 19 years i've been asking that question and reminding women and men to take charge of their breast health through early detection. this morning i'm joined by carolyn, president and founder of prevent cancer foundation and dr. robert warren, codirector of the lombardi comprehensive cancer center. thank you both for being here with us this morning. this is an anniversary for you as well because 19 years ago prevent cancer foundation brought this idea to wusa9 and our first medical partner of course is georgetown. carolyn, whdid you want to bring this buddy check idea to the washington, d.c. area? >> when i first heard about the buddy check idea which add originated in jacksonville, florida, i thought this is such a great program.

it simplifies the message. it puts it in sound bites and it will help raise awareness. our foundation has always been about prevention. but you can't prevent something you're not aware of. so it just made sense to me to try to find and partner with a local tv station and a local medical institution and let's raise awareness and get women all over the washington area which then had the highest rate of breast cancer mortality in the country, let's get women to understand what they can do to take charge. >> dr. warren, it's women and men. you've treated both. and you've heard some stories where buddy check has had an influence. >> absolutely. several years ago right around father's day, you and i did a piece on male breast cancer to try to raise awareness. as luck would have it, a gentleman was watching the program who was an avid ten us -- tennis player. thought the lump in his breast was from his tennis racket. he saw our report, was my

patient. he's ten years out of breast cancer and is doing very well. >> that leads us to this. it's a simple phone call or a reminder from a buddy but it can be a life saver. >> reporter: in the far western appalachian portion of maryland lies the city of cumberland. two years ago i came here to meet buddy check 9's number one fan debbie foreignwall. don't recognize her? how about now. back then you couldn't miss the bald head decorated with the ribbon tattoo. >> i've already had my fourth haircut. i have a few curls now, too. >> you do. >> reporter: having hair is the only obvious change in deb. she's still a labor and delivery nurse. she is still supported in her cancer journey by their best buddy and good friend pam
